Kookaburra Fly was created from a deep connection to culture, Country and community. The kookaburra is known across Australia as a strong, watchful bird — a symbol of protection, awareness and voice. “Fly” represents growth, movement and the courage to rise above challenges. Together, Kookaburra Fly reflects our commitment to helping young people find their voice, build confidence and rise into their full potential.
We are a proud family-run and registered Australian company grounded in strong cultural foundations. The Cooper family holds a rich history as members of the original 16 family groups from Cummeragunja. Our work is guided by respect for elders, community, and the responsibility to create positive pathways for future generations.
Kookaburra Fly adheres to all 11 mandatory standards of Victoria’s Child Safe Standards designed to protect children from abuse and harm in organisations that provide services to them.
Founder & Director – Kookaburra Fly
Neil Cooper is a proud Yorta Yorta man who has lived and worked on Yorta Yorta Country his entire life. As Founder and Director of Kookaburra Fly, Neil brings a deep connection to culture, community and youth development.
With more than 25 years’ experience working across the education and government sectors, Neil has held a range of roles including teacher, cultural officer, Department of Justice worker, wellbeing curriculum and engagement officer, and leadership and management positions. This diverse experience provides Neil with a unique understanding of the challenges young people face and the systems that support them.
Neil is passionate about creating opportunities for young people to grow in confidence, strengthen their cultural identity and develop positive pathways for their future. His work focuses on building strong relationships with youth, families, schools and organisations to create culturally safe and meaningful programs.
Through Kookaburra Fly, Neil combines his professional experience, cultural knowledge and commitment to community to support young people to find their voice, build resilience and reach their full potential.
